Millennial Alerce.

One of my favorite trees is the majestic tree that grows in southern Chile.
The Alerce or Pehuén, its scientific name is Fitzroya cupressoides.
It grows between the regions of the lakes and the rivers, Although in the past it formed extensive forests today only there are some specimens between Valdivia and Chiloé in the Cordillera de la Costa and the Andes. He prefers shallow, poor and humid lands. It does not produce monospecific forests, but it is mixed with Coigue, Ñirres, Tépu, Canelo, etc.
This tree belongs to the conifers, because it has no flowers, but cone and strobilus, its development is extremely slow, growing trunk thickness only 1 cm every 15 or 20 years. Despite this it reaches sizes of up to 50 m in height and 3 or 4 in diameter, which suggests its great longevity, being able to live to 4,000 years, which makes it one of the longest living beings on the planet.
It is a tree that owns a beautiful wood, reason why was cut for the cracion of furniture and as part of the structure of the houses of the south of Chile, since there are so few copies, this tree was declared National monument, reason why the Felling of live specimens, is absolutely prohibited
If you have the opportunity to travel south, one stop you should do is visit a Alerce.
